The History of Dodson Boatyard

Dodson Boatyard began at the turn of the 19th century as the pier for the ferry running between Stonington and Watch Hill. Around 1950, the site became home to the Elwell B. Thomas Boat Livery. In 1959, John Dodson entered the marina business, purchasing the property, renaming it, and laying the foundation for what would become Dodson Boat Yard, Inc.

Over the following decades, Dodson’s dedication, craftsmanship, and attentive service established the yard as a trusted presence in Stonington Harbor. In 1980, the boatyard was purchased by Robert Snyder Sr. and Robert Snyder Jr., marking a new chapter of growth. Since then, the Snyder family has expanded the yard’s services and capabilities while preserving its small, independent spirit and commitment to personalized care.

Today, under Robert Snyder Jr.’s leadership, Dodson’s continues to build lasting relationships with customers and employees alike, earning a reputation for expertise, integrity, and genuine attention to every boat that comes through the yard.

Protected breakwaters provide calm waters even during Nor’easters, while convenient land access makes visiting effortless. Beyond its prime location, the harbor is part of a vibrant coastal community, offering exceptional dining, scenic views, and a rich maritime heritage.

The Town

Stonington’s history as a bustling port dates back to the 19th century, when paddlewheel steamers and railroads made it a hub for commerce and travel along Long Island Sound. Though the arrival of modern highways transformed the town into a quieter retreat, Stonington has retained its charm. Historic homes, picturesque streets, and an active calendar of cultural events—from farmers’ markets to concerts and village fairs—create a lively, welcoming community that continues to celebrate its maritime heritage.
